Hommage à William Deutz 2019

Hommage à William Deutz 2019

Crafted only in the finest vintages and in limited quantities, the Hommage à William Deutz single-vineyard cuvées are rooted in a simple conviction: certain sites deserve, at times, to be expressed on their own. With the 2019 vintage, Meurtet and La Côte Glacière offer a singular interpretation of the terroirs of Aÿ, in all their precision, authenticity and freedom.

The history of Maison Deutz has been shaped by the art of blending, the ability to bring together different origins to create a wine greater than the sum of its parts.

Focusing on a single site remains a rare exercise in Champagne. One that only makes sense when terroir and vintage appear in perfect harmony. It is rooted in an intimate knowledge of the House's vineyard, acquired season after season, parcel by parcel, through careful observation of the vine

In 2019, a warm and dry growing season gave rise to grapes of remarkable concentration, while preserving the freshness and balance essential to great Champagne wines. More than that, it offered the terroirs of Aÿ particularly clear conditions of expression.

Allowing each parcel to reveal its personality with even greater clarity.

A reading of place.

A reading of soil.

A reading of vintage.

Just a few hundred metres apart, Meurtet and La Côte Glacière share the same origin: the hillsides of Aÿ.

La Côte Glacière faces south.

On this historic Deutz parcel, mature vines draw their character from shallow soils where chalk lies close to the surface. Bathed in sunlight throughout the day, the site naturally concentrates the energy of the vintage. In 2019, it reveals the full intensity of the terroir: depth, structure and a distinctive chalk-driven tension that runs through the wine from beginning to end. Here, Pinot Noir finds a vertical, precise and distinctly mineral expression.

Meurtet tells a different story. Facing east, the site benefits from a gentler exposure and a naturally slower pace of ripening. The resulting wines are defined by finesse, where depth is revealed through nuance and precision rather than power. In 2019, sunshine and limited water reserves brought additional density to this usually delicate expression. The wine retains its silky texture, natural harmony and refinement, while gaining breadth and persistence. A particularly accomplished interpretation of Meurtet, where the energy of the vintage meets the elegance of the terroir.

Two expressions of Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Aÿ.

Two tributes to the richness of the House's historic lands.
